Freshman English focuses on the reading and writing skills established in the common core standards now adopted by most states in the U.S. My goal is to help students attain at or beyond grade level skills in reading, writing, and speech. Students are expected to meet the State’s Common Core Standards in reading and writing and build a foundation to exceed even beyond these benchmarks. Assignments and course work will be tailored to these standards, including common formative assessments and summative assessments. Students will also work on speaking skills and building confidence and ease with the basic communication skills needed for college and job success.
The course will cover a wide array of literature and nonfiction readings. Students will work on developing strong writing skills based on the information they read in class. Working on evidence and supporting information for a strong thesis will be our primary goal in writing. The course will begin with high interest reading and the students will move toward reading classic Greek mythology and Shakespearean texts and poetry. Students will be given many opportunities to strengthen reading and writing skills to improve student success in achieving Common Core Standards and their progress will be monitored throughout the semester through Common Formative Assessments.
This website has been designed specifically to give support to active students who may miss class due to sports or other extra-curricular activities or need to access work because they have lost a hand out given in class.
