With honor, a naming of a track: “Harland D. Towne Track”

Thursday, April 25, 2013

A vesting of a name where there was none.

Preceding Creswell High School’s final track & field meet of the season, the perviously unnamed CHS athletic track will have a name bestowed upon it.

Harland D. Towne Track

A fitting name to honor a past Creswell High School educator and coach.

Harland Towne passed away last fall and had been a great educator, coach and athletic volunteer not only for Creswell but for the Eugene/Springfield area.  Harland was a great individual who helped promote athletics and he knew the importance of being a contributing member of society.  Harland lead by example with his work ethic, love of life and his willingness to teach and coach others.

A historic background

Harland Towne worked for Creswell High School as a teacher and coached basketball, cross country and track from 1960 to 1974, then for Junction City High School from 1975 to 1992, when he retired.  He was the head basketball coach for the 1969 State 2A Boys Basketball Team.  Towne was also an Oregon Track Club official for over 50 years as the club’s Head Pole Vault Official.  As the Head Official, Harland was involved with thousands of athletes ranging from high school state championships, NCAA Championships, USA Olympic Trials, and world record holders.  When the current High School was built in 1969, Harland was one of the community members that helped build the cinder track/football facilities that we use today.

A Ceremony that ends with a lasting name for our High School Track

“The dedication ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 25th at the start of Creswell High School’s final track & field meet of the season.  At the start of the meet (4:00 PM) we will have a dedication of the sign that will be in place on the current “Press Box” and have a one lap walk/jog for anyone who would like to participate.  While the lap is taking place, the PA Announcer will give a biography about Harland.”  – David Nickelson, CHS Teacher/Coach/Naming Sponsor Lead

Support for the endeavor came from Creswell High School, the CHS Athletic Department, the Creswell High School Athletic Hall of Fame committee, former coaches, former athletes and the family.
