Creswell Lady Dawgs Basketball

Philosophy of the Program:

Provide a positive and safe environment that allows the girls to become the best     basketball players that they can be. This is done though teaching the fundamentals and basic concepts of basketball and providing positive reinforcements for effort and   improvement. Success is measured in improvement of the individuals as well as a team.

Philosophy of the Team:

As a team we work together on common goals for team success. We help each other in positive ways to build the character of the team. We stand united and remain united in times of success as well as in times of adversity.

Philosophy of the Individual Player:

As team players, each individual must work hard to meet team and individual goals. Players need to focus on improvement and learn various roles needed for program’s success, and they need to be willing to accept their role for the betterment of the team.

Expectations:

Coach Expectations:

·       A coach is expected to teach and train in the fundamentals of the game of basketball

·       A coach is to provide a safe, positive atmosphere that allows the girls to grow and develop their character, in and out of basketball

·       A coach should be dedicated to the success of the program by making a commitment to continually studying and learning more about the sport and how to apply that knowledge to the girls on their team.

·       A coach needs to be willing to listen to parental concerns and honestly explain why certain decisions have been made.

·       A coach follows the directives of the administration in times of policy understanding, proper paperwork for the players, and in dealing with player disciplinary actions.

Player Expectations:

·       A player is expected to treat coaches, other players, and opponents with respect. Respect is shown through positive actions, both verbal and physical.

·       During practice and game times, a player needs to focus and give 100% effort

·       Players are expected to be on time. If tardy or an absences is unavoidable, then their coach needs to have prior notification. Unexcused tardies and absences will not be tolerated.

·       Players are expected to have the proper clothing and equipment for games and practices.

Tryout Procedures

As athletes continue in their participation of sports throughout their schooling, the expectations and intensity increases. In Elementary school everyone who wants to play can, and everyone gets equal playing time. In Middle school it is still the same for everyone who wants to play, but some athletes put more and more time into their development and get more and more playing time. High school is much more competitive. Time commitments are greater and the pressure to perform well increases. Because of this, high school basketball goes through a tryout procedure. We, as coaches, are not just looking for quality basketball players now, but we are also evaluating the potential of athletes for our basketball program. Whether or not you feel like your abilities are strong; if you like basketball, then you should tryout. The following is what we are looking for in our program.

I.    Academics

Before the first practice all athletes will need to get a progress report from each teacher and turn in to me. If you are failing any classes at all, we (coaches) will have a meeting with you to see if you will be able to get your grades to passing. I will also talk with your teachers of the classes you are failing. This will ad to our decision of whether or not you will remain on the team. We expect our athletes to be model students.

II.   Commitment

Players and parents should understand the level of commitment needed to play high school basketball. All athletes are encouraged to participate in multiple sports throughout the year. With that said, it is important for players to participate in Fall and Spring Open Gyms, and you are expected to participate as much as possible in our 5 week summer program. Effort and hard work are factors that we look at for in our athletes.

III.  Attendance

Unexcused absences will not be tolerated. If you miss a tryout practice without letting me know in advance, a certain amount of running will get you back on the team. If it happens a second time you will be dismissed from the team.

IV.  Miscellaneous

The tryout phase of basketball is very challenging and demanding. You will be very tired and sore. There is a difference between sore and injured. If you are injured, we need to know about it to take steps for rehabilitation. (Missing practice is not rehabilitation.) Fatigue and soreness is not an excuse for missing practice.

V.  Character

Your behavior in school and in the community is watched closely. If you have a tendency to get detentions and/or suspensions, or get in trouble with the law, then you will most likely not play in our program. This is a case-by-case scenario. We (coaches) will have a meeting with you to set up a behavior plan for you to follow with consequences for failure to follow the plan.

VI.  Order of player selection by coaches

  1. This year’s varsity (Those who will help with the success of the this years team the most.)
  2. Next year’s varsity (This is the players usually known as “swing” players. This could be player on varsity who get some JV playing time, or JV players who get varsity playing time)
  3. Future Varsity Potential (This includes Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen who are not part of categories (1) or (2), and who we feel like still have potential of being a varsity player in high school.)

VII.  Decisions

At the end of tryouts, each athlete will meet with coaches to talk about their standing with the team. Our hope is not to cut a player, but sometimes circumstances are such that it is necessary for cuts to be made. This is the part of coaching I hate, but unfortunately it is necessary.  Players who are cut or elect not to play during the tryout phase will be fully re-funded for their fees.  Remember, it is possible to move up and down on teams during the year based on your attitude and performance.

As parents, if you feel like the decision is unfair to your daughter, please call me and set up an appointment to discuss it further.

Parental expectations:

·       Parents need to provide encouragement and Positive feedback and their daughters.

·       Parents are to show respect to the girls, coaches, opponents, and referees.

·       Parents have the right to question personal concern about their daughter. However, parents do not have a right to question philosophies of the team. In other words, questioning the type of offense or defense used, or wanting to discuss other players, is not appropriate.

·       If a concern arises, parents are expected to set up an appointment with the coach on a NON-GAME DAY to discuss the matter, (Please do not approach a coach on a game day with concerns to discuss. You may let a coach know that you would like to set up an appointment. The coach may set up the time then, or the coach may ask you to call and make the appointment.)

DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS:

Absences:

Absence from practice will be excused only for the following reasons:

·         Personal or family illness and /or emergencies.

·         Family activities or vacation (hopefully these can be worked around the basketball calendar.)

·         School related activities. (Field trips and projects, but NOT DETENTION.)

Any other absence will be considered unexcused. Unexcused absences will result in some type of action. These actions could be things like running, or staying late to clean equipment. On the second unexcused absence, a meeting will be set up with the parent to discuss if their daughter really wants to play. A one game suspension will also take place. A plan will be made up at that meeting to discuss further actions if it is to become necessary. Included in the plan will be the next unexcused absence will result in removal from the team.

Tardies:

Tardies will be excused for the same reasons as absences. Two unexcused tardies equal one unexcused absence. Therefore, the same action for unexcused absences applies to tardies.

Training Rules Violations (Code of Conduct)

These are additions to the already in place Code of Conduct by the school. If a student is arrested or given a citation for possession of drugs and/or alcohol, whether they self report or not, an automatic two week suspension from practice and at least three games will be issued. Of course, a second violation will result in a dismissal from the team.

Theft of personal property

The consequences will be a two-week suspension and at least a three game suspension for the first offense. Dismissal from the team will result from the second offense. The consequences in the student and parent handbook will also be used. As reminder, the consequences in the student handbook are as follows:  For the first offense, a 3 to 5 day suspension from school will occur. For the second offense, a 5 to 10 day suspension from school will occur.

Game Day Rules and Responsibilities:

Dress Code:

All coaches, players, and managers in our program will be required to dress neatly for all home and away games. The girls should wear a winter appropriate dress, skirt, or pants with dress or casual shoes. When we travel, we not only represent the school but we also represent the entire community. Most people will behave according to the way they are dressed, and this is important for showing pride in our program, school, and community.

Transportation To and From Games:

Unless a special circumstance arises, all players need to ride the bus with the team to a contest. A special circumstance would be an emergency or a family situation that would not allow a player to be at the school at the designated time for departure. Please contact the coach when a circumstance arises. It is also recommended that players return to the high school with the team on the bus. If there is an emergency or situation that requires the player to not return to the school, please let the coach know ahead of time. No matter what the circumstance is, a player can only ride with his or her own parent. Permission will NOT be granted to ride home with a friend or non-relative.

Technical Fouls:

Discipline and sportsmanship are very important part of being successful as a team. Therefore, failure to represent our program in a positive way will not be tolerated. Any player who receives a technical foul will be removed from the game. Depending on the severity of the call, it will be at the discretion of the coach to decide whether or not the player will be allowed to return to the game. The player will then write a letter of apology to the rest of the team and present it at the next practice. If a player seems to have a problem in this area of technical fouls, a meeting will be stet up with the player, their parent(s), coaches, and the athletic director to discuss further actions and prevention of this behavior.

Seating during games:

All varsity players need to be dressed down in uniform and sitting together at the start of the JV game to watch and learn about the offense and defense of the opponent. After half time of the JV game the Varsity will then go to a designated location to jog and stretch. During the fourth quarter the team will meet in the locker room for final game instructions. It is strongly recommended that all JV1 and JV2 player sit together during the Varsity game. This is not always easy to do, but it does promote team unity.

Communication: The chain of command

Please adhere to the following steps whenever important information regarding any aspect of the athletic program including concerns, grievances, or questions must be communicated.

  1. Players must first speak to their coaches.
  2. Assistant coaches must speak to the head coach in their sport. (If the matter involves two programs, the head coaches must first discuss the matter.)
  3. The head coach must take his/her concerns to the athletic director. (If any player, Parent, or assistant coach approaches the principle, they are referred immediately to the head coach.)
  4. The athletic director communicates with the principal.
  5. The Principal speaks to the superintendent. (If any player, Parent, or assistant coach approaches the principal they are immediately referred to the head coach.)
  6. The superintendent addresses the board of education.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."

·         Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the school. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents or eligible students to review the records. Schools may charge a fee for copies.

·         Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if the school still decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student has the right to place a statement with the record setting forth his or her view about the contested information.

·         Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information from a student's education record. However, FERPA allows schools to disclose those records, without consent, to the following parties or under the following conditions (34 CFR § 99.31):

    • School officials with legitimate educational interest;
    • Other schools to which a student is transferring;
    • Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;
    • Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student;
    • Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school;
    • Accrediting organizations;
    • To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;
    • Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and
    • State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State law.

Schools may disclose, without consent, "directory" information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, schools must tell parents and eligible students about directory information and allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that the school not disclose directory information about them. Schools must notify parents and eligible students annually of their rights under FERPA. The actual means of notification (special letter, inclusion in a PTA bulletin, student handbook, or newspaper article) is left to the discretion of each school.
