Report to the Creswell School Board – September, 2005

Special Education:

As always, there are changes at the start of the new school year. We welcomed Cheryl Hanzlik to our special education group. Ms. Hanzlik moved to Oregon from California and brought a plethora of skills. We’re delighted to have her at Creswell High School.

On August 19, Marilyn Cruzan, Jill Murray, Vickie McGillivray and I attended a workshop on the Special Edvantage data system at Linn-Benton- Lincoln ESD. This system will replace the RECMAN one that we have been using for several years. Jill and Vicky and I presented this information to the special ed staff on September 1.

Jill Murray and Tracey Davis met on August 23,34,and 25 to discuss the needs of incoming high school students and to design a life skills curriculum. They are to be commended for their work.

Our Special Ed. staff met on August 31 to discuss changes in the IDEA 2004 law, the Special Edvantage change, improvement goals, and staffing needs.

In addition, I have attended several out of town placement meetings for students.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB):

Marilyn Cruzan and I attended the NCLB  (ODE) workshop in Bend on August 15-16. We obtained a great deal of information on the law and funding. When we returned, we worked on the final calculations concerning students in special education and those students who took lower level tests. We are very pleased that all three schools as well as the District met adequate yearly progress (AYP).

As I write this, the Title 1 teachers are planning their testing schedule and parent involvement activities.

It has been a busy start to the year. I am delighted to see all of our staff and am looking forward to a productive year

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen Adler, Director of Special Education/NCLB
