Washington, D.C. / NYC - tour was great – we have a presentation planned.

PE Department – Mr. Milne and Ms. Thomas are postponing the annual “Turkey Trot” until December this year and will call it the “Jingle Bell Run”.  We felt that this was important because of all the non-school days in November.  The Jingle Bell Run will be tied to our Student Council can food drive.  The winning boy and girl at each grade level will win a turkey, second place finishers will win chickens and the third place finishers will win Cornish game hens.  All students that participate will receive a chance to win a prize.

Music Program – Our Winter Concert will take place on December 10th at CHS.

Edline – Parents and guardians continue to make positive comments regarding Edline.

Student / Parent / Teacher Conferences – will be held on November 19th and 20th.  November 10th will be used as conference prep, since all teachers will be writing comments for every student that they teach.  Our goal is to have 100% of our parents in for conferences.  Most of our staff is willing to conference any day of that week to accommodate students and parents.

Winter Sports– Girls basketball started on Monday, October 20th.  Game schedule attached.

December – The Santa Store will be opening on December 2nd. If you have any new or slightly used items, please drop them off at CMS.  We can also use gift wrapping paper, gift boxes and tape for students to wrap their presents.   Our students purchase the gifts by using their positive behavior GROWL tickets.

Behavior Referrals – During the first 9 weeks we averaged 2.6 referrals per day.  This is significantly lower than the first quarter last year.  We believe that it has a great deal to do with having so much more room in our new school.  Students are taking pride in our school.  The bar has been raised.

School Improvement Grant – A portion of the grant has arrived.  We have been taking advantage of it by attending professional learning conferences.  Ten staff members (3 from each building and Ruby Price) attended a Leadership Academy – Getting Serious about School Reform.  Dr. Robert Marzano was the presenter.  The group that attended has had two follow up meetings to discuss ways to incorporate the ideas learned K-12.  Three CMS staff members attended a conference on Professional Learning Communities.  We were also able to send 6 staff members to a two day conference titled; Moving Research into Classrooms: The main focus points were: Adolescent Literacy, K-8 Math and ELL Strategies.  The next step that we will take is to create a School Improvement Plan.

Ken Donner – Is going to be recognized as Oregon’s Middle School Leader of Student Councils (National Association of Student Councils)  A presentation is being arranged.  We are excited and happy for Ken.
